Frequently asked
GBP is driven primarily by Bank of England interest-rate expectations, UK inflation and wage data, gilt yields relative to US Treasuries and Bunds, and UK political risk. Global risk sentiment matters too — the Pound tends to weaken when equities sell off.
The direction of GBP depends on how the Bank of England's rate path compares with the Federal Reserve and ECB. When markets expect the BoE to cut more slowly than peers, Sterling typically strengthens against the Dollar and Euro.
There is no absolute 'good' rate — it depends on the multi-year range. Historically, GBP/USD above 1.30 and GBP/EUR above 1.18 have been considered strong. Live rates and 90-day charts are on our tools page.
